Help Picking Out a New Monitor

Postby Odin_051 » Thu Jan 12, 2017 4:28 pm

So I've been gaming on a 32" 720p TV for about a decade and I think it's about time I upgraded. It seems there's quite a few options out nowadays and I'm hoping to get some advice.

I'm looking at either a 1440p or a 4k, (ideally a 32", but I could be convinced to go for a 27") and I seem to be getting some conflicting info. Some folks say 60 Hz 4k looks better than 144 Hz 1440p, others say the opposite. Same story about gsync being night and day or being a waste of money.

Can anyone provide a recommendation? For sake of argument, lets assume cost is a non-issue and that I have an Nvidia GPU that is capable of 60 fps 4k @ ultra settings.

I haven't bought a monitor for ages either. Currently have 2x1080p monitors, 75hz IIRC. I believe that refresh rate should reduce motion blur while 4k will be a much sharper or more detailed image.

I think Jammy recently purchased a monitor, so it might be worth mentioning this thread on Discord.

One other thought. Your current hardware can do 4k @ 60hz at Ultra but what happens in 1-2 years? Would you rather lower resolution, or graphics features (Ultra)? I guess if you go 1440 you start at the lower res and miss out on the 4k period entirely.. can 4k monitors also handle 1440 comfortably?

Edit: I think Overclock3D are decent for reviews etc

I know Drago hates Linus but I think his videos are at least interesting..

If your 720p TV is running at 60 or less Hz, go for 60Hz 4K. Only people adapted to higher refresh rates actually notice the difference, at least that's my experience so far. Also, you need a more capable GPU to run a game at ~144/72 Hz than at ~60Hz.

If that is the case, I'd recommend getting a 120Hz 4K monitor that (if there's one that has this, I know 1080p monitrs that do this) displays a black image every second frame (so you actually only get 60Hz and only need 60 fps.

When the monitor displays a black screen every second frame at 120Hz, the image will appear smoother than a monitor displaying at plain 60 Hz. Additionaly, it doesn't require more GPU power than a plain 60Hz monitor.

That's all advice I can offer.

Of course, if you regularly played on a 120/144+Hz monitor (or your TV has that refresh rate), I'd recommend getting a monitor that has at least the same refresh rate ;)

Mal that Q3 2017 beast looks awesome, if I can convince myself to wait I may very well grab that.

Drago, my TV is a pos Vizio. I think it claims 120 Hz but actually runs at 60 Hz. The black frame every other refresh does sound interesting. I'll have a look around and see if I can find anything like that. Would you happen to know what that feature is called?
Edit: you may have a point about the refresh rate. I'll have to find a store selling monitors so I can have a look at a higher refresh rate to see if I notice a difference at all.

Eizo for example calls it "Black Frame Insertion" (BFI). Don't know if other manufacturers give it different names...

I picked up one of these at christmas and I'm really pleased with it. 1440p 60hz for a decent price: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/m ... .HG7EE.007
