The carrier one was interesting but really only worth anything if you have a guild to play captain on it.

And obviously someone to shoot with it.

Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods.

In still in the wow phase with SC at the minute, mouth agape staring in wonderment, but starting to notice how good the gameplay is as well. Very impressed so far and having a lot of fun playing the Alpha.

Ok, ok.

Motherboard:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

CPU:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

RAM:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

I got the 6600K instead of the 6700K because for gaming hyperthreading will do absolutely nothing in most cases. The RAM has decent timings and I like G.SKill as a brand. The motherboard is a good compromise between features and price.

I have basically decided to go all out and get a GTX 1070, vs the slightly cheaper 980ti, or the much cheaper 1060. The 980ti draws a lot more power, so over the 5 years I plan to run the card the 1070 will pay the additional £50 price tag back many times over. The 1070 should stay relevant longer than the 1060.

All I need to do is decide which 1070 to get and whether I buy new or try to get a bargain on ebay or similar, not that I think too many ppl will be selling a 2nd hand 1070 at this point.

I found the following review of several 1070s:
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_ ... _review/14

Where it seems the Gainward cards are pretty good.

There is a cheaper version of the gainward card here:
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gainwar ... 1683mhz-bo

But that does not have HDMI 2.0b or a backplate, or perhaps a decent cooling system (might be less effective or noisy), or perhaps this is just as good as the Phoenix card which was tested in that benchmark:
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gainwar ... 683mhz-boo

Last, but not least, the new board has an M.2 slot so I might look at getting a new M.2 SSD to make building the new system alongside the existing one easier, something like this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-500GB- ... ds=M.2+ssd

Edit:
Ok, I did it. I took the plunge tonight and ordered these:

M.2 SSD: (I got the 256GB version)
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/stor ... 2_review/1
https://www.quietpc.com/samsung-m2-nvme-ssds

GPU:
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_ ... x_review/1
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gainwar ... 683mhz-boo

I feel oddly empty inside.. or maybe that's my bank account. :?

Thats a very nice system Mal.

Ive only upgraded to a std 1060 with my i5 3570 and the difference in SC is noticeable, not so much in detail, but in pure frames. Saying that the net code is whats holding the frames back at the moment, so i expect as they work on it in 2017 it'll become a lot better.

In ED, I took off Vsync and was getting 150-200 fps, dropping to 110 in combat or in a busy space station. Ludicrous with all settings as high as they would go!!!

It's about the same for me, but turning of VSync would get me a helluva lot of tearing. Almost unplayable. So I am just fine with leaving it on...

I only upgrade every 5 years so I have to make a big leap each time. I have to admit I kinda talked myself into the 1070 though :) Ah well, life is for living, money is for spending.
